Re-imagining the civic commons

Type: Fabrication

Location: Lexington, KY

Status: Completed 2016

The Bluegrass Community Foundation, in cooperation with Lexington Public Library, enlisted NOMI to assist in the design and fabrication of prototypes for a $4 million dollar grant application.  Our task was to develop test elements as part of an exploration into how the downtown library location can transform successfully into a place for fun and learning.

We considered several different aspects of active and resting spaces where reading and learning could be coupled with play and action. Among others, our prototypes included a life size pin for board games, a pool noodle maze, reading cubes and tubes. Families came on multiple days to experience the spaces and gave their feedback. The process was successful as the BGCF was granted $250,000 to further study this as a permanent solution on a larger scale.

Our design process can sometimes include product testers!
