health Science Building at the university of kentucky
Type: Renovation
Location: Lexington, KY
Status: Completed 2008
The classroom design for this fit up responds to the strict technological demands of the client and the existing structure of the building. This project consisted of one large assembly classroom and an adjacent space in the corridor. The client needed a larger classroom to meet the increasing student enrollment for the dentistry and medical programs at the University of Kentucky.
Incorporating functionality of the space and inventive design created challenges such as; code compliance for a new program into an existing space, coordination of client selected furniture with electrical infrastructure in the slab, creating an accessible view for all seated, as well as incorporating sophisticated presentation equipment.
Functionality of the space was achieved by using a structured seating arrangement. The rows of seating are paired on tiers to provide good site lines and ample space for collaboration between students. The movement of the geometry in the room provides a central focus on the stationary podium where the presenter will be located.
In order to continue the aesthetics of the design, the architect chose strong curvilinear soffits and a linear ceiling grid to dissolve the existing geometry of the amphitheater building shell. Electronic equipment is located in the soffits to allow all viewers to appreciate the content and presentation. Contemporary finishes like perforated metal ceiling and wood panels were chosen to contrast the traditional wood of the existing building.
By collaborating with the owner, the goal of creating a classroom that is current with today’s advanced teaching technology and also has the infrastructure for future technologies and/or changes in teaching methods was achieved.
