Rail car at gatton park

Once a working rail car, this 53-foot-long container—forty years etched into its steel—has been carefully transformed into a new concession building for Gatton Park. Pulled from the adjacent rail yard and set into place, the rail car begins a second life as architecture, gathering people rather than freight. NOMI Design guided the journey from movement and foundations to the design of a seamless addition and a finely crafted interior. Inside, a custom-built public space frames the process of ordering food and drinks, shaped around coordinated concession equipment and health department requirements. The rail car meets the plaza through a glowing aluminum grating, illuminated from below, inviting visitors across a luminous threshold at night. Exterior graphic concepts extend the project beyond the object itself, setting the stage for an artist-led intervention and reinforcing the rail car’s new identity as both infrastructure and civic landmark.
