Following the devastating floods in eastern Kentucky in 2022, NOMI was commissioned in 2023 to design the renovation of the Hindman School of Craft. This building holds deep historical and cultural significance. It currently serves as the home of the Troublesome Creek Stringed Instrument Company, a notable nonprofit that runs a recovery program where participants are trained to become luthiers. Originally constructed in 1931 as part of the Works Progress Administration (WPA), the building stands out for its distinctive architecture. As noted in the National Register of Historic Places Nomination, “Of all the WPA buildings built in the county in the 1930s, this is the most ambitious and out-of-place. It was the largest educational facility constructed in the county before the mid-1970s and features three tunneled archways leading into a central courtyard, which is enclosed by classrooms and stone-columned covered walkways.”
